UFC officials announced yesterday that the promotion would be returning to Montreal, Quebec, Canada for UFC 145 and also confirmed the welterweight bout between top 170-pound prospect Rory MacDonald and British brawler Che Mills.
The fight was originally announced by MacDonald during an on air interview on “UFC Central” with Joe Ferraro. MacDonald was expected to compete at this month’s UFC 140 in Toronto, however; he was forced to withdraw from his fight due to injury. MacDonald is 3-1 within the UFC and 12-1 in his professional MMA career. His only loss occurred in 2010 at the hands of current division number one contender Carlos Condit.
The announcement of UFC’s return to Montreal is no shocker. The UFC has regularly held events in Montreal since their first event, UFC 83: St. Pierre vs. Serra 2. UFC 145 Montreal has yet to formally lock in a date or time; however, the Bell Centre on March 24th, 2012 is what is expected to be officially announced shortly.
Che Mills made his UFC debut at UFC 138: Munoz vs. Leben in Birmingham, England. Mills won the fight by kicking the living daylights out of Chis Cope. An upset over MacDonald would make a serious statement for the UFC newcomer in the very talented welterweight division.
UFC Montreal events attract a huge number of UFC fans, before the massive UFC 129 event hosted in Toronto which saw over 55 thousand fans in attendance; Montreal events broke several records within the UFC. UFC 83: St. Pierre vs. Serra 2 held on April 19, 2008 broke two UFC records. The first record broken was the fastest sellout ever. UFC 83 sold most of their tickets to UFC Fight Club members in the first 24 hours of the Fight Club presale. The second record broken at UFC 83 was the attendance record, with 21,390 fans in attendance! UFC Montreal quickly broke this record the next time they returned to Montreal for UFC 97 with 21,451 attendees!
