Jay’s Brandon Morrow Almost Makes History

Brandon Morrow played his first complete game for the Jays on Sunday. He was just seconds away from achieving a no-hitter. With two outs in the ninth inning he allowed a base hit from Evan Longoria. You might imagine that Morrow would be extremely upset when he walked over to the bleacher seeing that he just missed out on pitching a no-hitter, however; Morrow was extremely pleased with his performance. He pitched his first complete game for the jays, achieved a shut-out and struck out 17 batters. “Those things combined were more than enough to overcome the feeling of the missed no-hitter. That would have been a great feat, but I’ll start at a complete-game, one-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts.” Morrow commented after the game.

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Brandon Morrow works against the Tampa Bay Rays during third-inning MLB baseball game action in Toronto, Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010.

His performance on Sunday secured a three game sweep for the Jays against the Rays, winning 1-0. Morrow came very close to making history for the Toronto Blue Jays franchise. The only no-hitter in Toronto history was Sept 2, 1990 in Cleveland by Dave Stieb. The current franchise record for strikeouts is 18, held by Roger Clemens, one more yesterday would have allowed Morrow to tie Clemens.
