One of Canada’s best and most well known freestyle skiers, Sarah Burke, passed away yesterday morning due to injuries sustained while training in Utah. She tore the artery that supplies blood to the brain stem during a training run in the superpipe at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort. The ruptured artery caused a severe hemorrhage in her brain and put her into cardiac arrest. She was operated on at the hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Tests later determined that she had suffered irreversible brain damage, she was put on life support and therapeutic hypothermia was initiated to protect her brain. Following her surgery to repair the torn artery,  she was put into  a medically induced coma, until she died on Thursday morning nine days following the accident.

Today it was revealed that since the accident occurred in the United States, her family is now stuck with a MASSIVE $550,000 medical bill. Personally I think it is disgusting that neither the Canadian Olympic Committee; whom she was a STRONG advocate for, nor her sponsor whom she was training for when the accident occurred have come forward and supplied donations to her family.

Sarah was an advocate for the sport, and is accredited with helping to get the sport included in the 2014 Winter Olympics. She was widely considered the favourite to win the gold medal. Rest in peace Sarah.

According to NFL analyst Rob Lowe, Indianpolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will not be returning to play in the NFL.

Lowe tweeted the information Wednesday night:

Lowe followed up his tweet by asking another individual with knowledge, NFL Network’s Rich Eisen, if the information was true. He stated that he hoped it was not true, however chances are he is correct.

I called it a few days ago when the Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Jim Caldwell… I asked my fans on twitter if they thought maybe the Colts knew something we didn’t, and if they thought that Manning could possibly be in line to replace Caldwell? Most of you thought I sounded crazy, however; if the news is true and Manning will not be retuning to play in the NFL do you NOW think it is a possibility that he will become the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, or perhaps a different NFL team?

The UFC has decided to scrap their plans to host UFC 145 in Montreal, QC, Canada. Tom Wright, UFC Canadian Director of Operations, confirmed the event’s cancellation and stated that they DO plan on returning to Montreal later this year.

The reason for cancelling the event was attributed to “complications in scheduling” and a “desire to deliver a ‘championship card’”.

There were eight fights lined up for UFC 145 in Montreal, however; no headliner had been announced and the event was set to take place in just over 60 days. Clearly, they just couldn’t pull together the main event they wanted to deliver to Montreal fans.

The UFC is extremely popular in many areas of Canada, with Toronto and Montreal topping the list. Due to Montreal’s hometown favourite Georges St. Pierre’s serious knee injury and the UFC’s desire to host an event there this year; it is highly unlikely that GSP would be ready in time. At this point, only timing will be the determining factor as to whom we will see on the Montreal card.

Regardless of the disappointment that comes with the cancellation of any event, personally I’m happy that the UFC recognizes when they’re stretching to fill a card. I’m pleased that they did not try to pass off a poor bout for the main event. The fact is the fans will not go if the UFC does not deliver a great card.

With Elite Sports Tours I have helped to send thousands of UFC fans all across Canada. I know what the hype surrounding an event typically feels like and personally I think Canadians were not very excited about the card that was lined up. As much as we love watching Canadian talent fight in Canada, we want them to switch things up and give us some exciting match-ups. I’ve seen the same guys fight SEVERAL times since the first UFC 83 event hosted in Canada in April 2008.

Chael Sonnen is an impressive wrestler and was a NCAA Division I All-American wrestler at the University of Oregon. I would expect Sonnen to come into this fight with a vengeance as he feels he received the short end of the stick in his fight against current champion Anderson Silva. Still to this day, he refers to himself as the “Champion”.

Michael Bisping is coming off a win against Jason “Mayhem” Miller at the finale of the The Ultimate Fighter Season 14, a fight in which many UFC fans were expecting him to lose.
